The Moat Club

About Us

Founded in 1954, the Moat Club is one of the best known amateur drama groups in Ireland, with a proud history of producing plays for local audiences and for national and international competitions.  We have had our home in the Moat Theatre since the early 1960’s.

The Moat Club stages a number of productions every year.  There is great variety, from slick modern plays to the classics, some Shakespeare and of course, all the well loved Irish plays.  Our biggest production is our annual Christmas pantomime, now a firm favourite with Naas audiences.

We often compete in drama festivals and have enjoyed huge success over the years in both the one act and full length competitions since the late fifties.

During that time they have been very successful winning One Act Open All-Irelands in 1983, 1989, 1999, 2016 and 2018 and Three Act Open All-Irelands in 1974, 1979 and 2000. As well as performing on the All Ireland circuits, the club produces up to five shows a year with a Panto in late November which has been running now for over 35 years.

The Moat Club was formed in 1954 with the intention of providing the Naas area with suitable facilities to be used for dramatic theatre and table tennis.

In 1960 the Moat Club purchased the recently vacated Christian Brothers school and converted the upper rooms into a hall for table tennis. The lower rooms were converted into a 125-seat theatre in 1963, and called The Moat Theatre.

Following a major renovation project, we unveiled our current, first-class, state-of-the-art 200-seater facility in 2003, incorporating the building of the old Moat Club theatre .  This was recently upgraded once again with assistance from Kildare Co. Council and the Department of the Arts, so we are now fortunate to have a wonderful facility right in the heart of our community.

The theatre is located off the Main Street in Naas, at the back of the Town Hall.
